As a visual artist, Joy Sussman is a work in progress – always exploring, always developing. She does not want to be confined to one corner of photography because so many areas interest her: painterly still lifes, dreamy landscapes, fine art photography, tiny macro worlds, mobile art photography, and so on. Sometimes, the images reflect her desire to be a record-keeper of fleeting moments or the extraordinary beauty of ordinary things. Other times, she enjoys transforming the natural world into a sort of moody, atmospheric dream world, by adding texture or overlapping images in the editing process. She describes herself as contemplative, creative, and curious about everything, and her work reflects those qualities.
Joy has been fascinated with the magic of taking pictures -- saving and savoring moments in time, from the monumental to the almost microscopic -- for decades, ever since she was a little girl and received her first Kodak Instamatic camera for a Christmas present at the age of 7. Many cameras later, she now works interchangeably with a full-frame Canon DSLR camera (5D Mark iii) and an iPhone to capture images, and then uses a combination of desktop software and mobile editing apps to add textural interest and mood.
Joy has lived in the northeastern United States her whole life (Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and currently northern New Jersey). Although she loves traveling and exploring the world, she doesn’t think she could ever leave behind this region of her country, which showcases all four seasons so fully and beautifully.
Joy majored in Art History at Vassar College, and after several years of working in the creative sector of advertising in NYC and Philadelphia, she is now a full-time photographer. Aside from local shoots, she teaches online classes in photography. She also created and curates/edits a magazine called Catch Light: Creative Inspiration for Photographers and Visual Artists (available in print and digital formats). The magazine features exclusive interviews and images from photographers and visual artists from all around the world.
